Everything carbon credits
Carbon credits are tradable certificates that represent the reduction or removal of one metric ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) or equivalent greenhouse gases (GHG). They are used to offset emissions and incentivize environmental sustainability. The types of carbon credits are generally categorized by their origin and the type of activity they represent.
Compliance Credits
Purpose: Used to meet mandatory regulatory requirements under government-mandated schemes like cap-and-trade programs.
Examples:
EU Allowances (EUAs): Credits under the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).
California Carbon Allowances (CCAs): Credits under California’s cap-and-trade program.
Voluntary Credits
Purpose: Purchased by businesses or individuals to voluntarily offset their emissions. These credits support specific projects aimed at reducing or removing carbon emissions.
Types:
Standard Credits: Offset emissions but lack additional environmental or social co-benefits.

Project-Based Credits

Reforestation/Afforestation Credits: From planting trees or protecting existing forests that sequester carbon.
Avoided Deforestation (REDD+) Credits: From preventing deforestation in high-risk areas, preserving carbon stores.
Methane Capture Credits: From projects capturing methane from landfills, agriculture, or industrial processes.
Industrial Efficiency Credits: From upgrading industrial processes to reduce emissions.
Removal-Based Credits
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): From capturing CO2 emissions and storing them underground.
Direct Air Capture (DAC): From technologies that pull CO2 directly from the atmosphere.
